The weather has finally turned and that chill in the air has now turned to a cold wind. The river Tamar is still fishing well with a mixture if species. Which is surprising as we have had a fuel spill at the Barbican and an illegal net stretching from the Corinthian yacht club up to west hoe? Mackerel are slowly disappearing with the occasional one being caught from the piers and these have been around the 1lb plus mark. There are still a lot of joeys being caught from Penlee point and Rame head. Pollock are everywhere, and to a decent size too. Codling are in the river but still not in any great numbers, we have had them from the Tamar Bridge out to Mountbatten pier. A lot of anglers are travelling up to Brixham as a lot are being caught from Berry head.

The girls have been out in force along the Hoe catching Ballan Wrasse and have had some crackers , Jo Screach had a nice 4lb 8oz and Kat partridge had one at 4lb 2oz.

The first shop competition of the season went off well. 25 Anglers fished Beesands Beach in what turned out to be a cracking night. The weather was light winds from the west and a slight swell to the coloured water, this however did eventually blow up around 1030pm and as expected heavy rains and high winds blew its way around the southwest, this did not matter much to the anglers as the match completed at 11.30. We had an awful drive back to Plymouth though. Fishing got better as the night progressed with Lee Knight leading the way from the start with lots of good size whiting and dogfish; I was fishing in the middle of the group, right in front of the Cricket inn. This was a bonus for me as there was a group singing in the pub and they were good too, so I had something to keep me interested. Lee eventually won the match with a big score of 41 points, myself second and Mitch 3rd. Not bad scores for a one rod and three hook comp. Fish caught were Dogfish, Whiting, Pollock. The next match will be a Christmas special on Sunday 21st December with a festive prize table; this again will be a one rod three hook match at Beesands from 10am until 4pm, pegs can be bought from the shop for £5.

The recent good weather has seen a lot of anglers and their families on a lot of popular marks in the Tamar and along the front of the Hoe. In the harbour a lot of Mackerel have been caught along with plenty of Garfish, though these have still been relatively small. Mountbatten pier is fishing quite well and prawns are plentiful at night. West Hoe pier has had some nice fish turn up with decent size Bass and Ballan Wrasse. Albert Warne had a lovely 3lb Plaice from West Hoe Pier.

One place that has not been producing much has been Devils Point, a lot of anglers have been putting some quality time in to get a Conger eel from their to no avail, I am sure that over the next few days and changing tides we will see one come off. Nick Cotton Snr had a 31lb eel from eastern kings and Terry had a one at 25lb from Pottery Quay.

The Cod have started to show in the river, a couple have been caught at Cremyll to 8lb, from Pottery Quay and again at looking Glass. The Plymouth and District Shore League saw some really big Rays this month. Six fish broke the 150% mark and two of those just falling short of the 200% barrier. The top two teams in division one, Roving Rods A and Brixham continue to set a standard not previously seen in this competition. Both sides matched each other with 29 points. The best fish of the heat was a 15-11 Thornback Ray by seafarers angler Clive Wagner, it also earns him runner up spot so far for the Sunday Independent best specimen award. Brixham’s Andy Copping had a brace of exceptional blonde Ray, 19-2-8 and 16-0-8 to take second spot with Kingsbridge SAC angler Nark Bennett’s Thornback Ray of 14-1 taking the final specimen points.Kevin Smith hit form for RRA with a fine brace of Ray, a Small Eyed of 12-1 and a Thornback of 12-10 helped his side stay top, but only by the smallest percentage margin.

It is intended to start the shop competitions again as the summer period has now gone. These will be arranged as before, within about an hours drive from the shop and at times as such that it does not interfere with the much popular Plymouth and District shore league.

Primarily these will be based on a friendly gathering of anglers of all abilities and ages enjoying a nights fishing, with the small bonus of winning a non substantial prize.

These will be pegged events with stewards nominated once the pegs have been drawn. You can buy your peg out of the bag from the shop for only £5. All monies taken will be divided up for the top 3 anglers of the match.

Rules of the match will be posted on the shop notice board.
